David Veal
Help us celebrate David! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember David.
David Eugene Veal was born February 28, 1954 in Milledgeville, GA. He passed away peacefully on his 100 acre dream farm in Watkinsville, GA on May 31, 2021.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene B. Veal in 2012. Survivors include his wife and partner of (almost) 41 years, Susan Stubbs Veal, and their children, Lauren Pitts (Jared) and Eric Veal. Grandchildren: Carson Burrell, Harper Pitts and Gaines Pitts. His mother Jane Veal and siblings Frank Veal (Lori) and Beverly Bonner (Danny). Nieces and nephews Meg Metzger (Jim and daughter Rilla), Sandy Dorsey (Chad and children Addison, Dean, Owen and Eden), and Wes Bonner (Lauren and daughter Ella), and Susan's parents Tommy and Peggy Stubbs.
David's passion in life was family. Whether from an early age, earning the title of president of his fraternity KTO at Young Harris College, to 30 years of his Lowe's management that earned him Manager of the Year in 1999. He volunteered alongside his dad at ACTS, and then quickly stepped up as needed for the last 15 years. He made the idea of family - in all shapes and forms - immensely important. He always had (or made) time for his family, whether it was surprising birthday visits, surprise school day lunches, or attending kids' sporting events - for grandkids, nieces and nephews - he was always there. (Typically with a big cup of sweet tea or Dr. Pepper in hand!)
David and his family have attended Athens Church for the past five years. His faith, dedication and love for God have been steadfast throughout his life. He prayed over every meal he ate, and loved being able to say that prayer with hands held all around the table.
David loved being outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, taking kids on golf cart rides or vigilantly working in his yard, you could always find him outside. He loved the water. From Lake Hartwell to St. Simon's to their backyard pool, you couldn't tear him away.
David and Susan loved to travel together. They traveled with several friends and family regularly. And Susan endured his hunting trips as much as he endured 40 years of UGA football games for her. (She did take him to the Varsity for home games!) Food was a favorite of his, but he didn't often try new dishes! BBQ, definitely Mexican - and always ice cream!
David mentored too many people to mention, although you know who you are. He taught and instilled a great work ethic into anyone who met him. He taught and encouraged everyone to live life to the fullest. When he laughed, his eyes squinted and his whole body and his whole face danced with the impact. It was immediately contagious and you laughed along.
He is a soul that left the world too early and will be missed daily. But his legacy will live on forever.
