David Schullinger-Krause of Woodstock, VT passed away unexpectedly on the morning of June 20, 2021. He was 55 years old.
David was born in Hartford, CT to Lannard and Elaine Krause, the third of three children. He attended Canterbury School in New Milford, CT and went on to study at Syracuse University and Plymouth State College. After graduating college in 1990, he held a variety of occupations including teaching English, teaching Wilderness First Aid and First Responder classes, and being an Emergency Medical Technician. He was a US Army veteran and member of the National Guard.
He will be well remembered for his joyful, outgoing personality, lively wit, piercing intelligence, and kindness to all. A passionate outdoorsman, David could often be found hiking, skiing, rock climbing, ice climbing, assisting with mountain rescue or just reading in a quiet spot.
In 2005, David traveled with the Harvard Mountaineering Club to remote, unclimbed mountains in the Central Borkoldoy Range of Kyrgyzstan as the expedition medic. During this trip, he had a solo first ascent of a mountain that he named Peak Schullinger-Krause. He spent several weeks in Haiti in 2010 providing medical relief in the wake of the earthquake there, and in 2016, he supported the Standing Rock protestors in South Dakota with his medical and survival skills.
David shared his love of travel and exploration with his wife, Sallie, and together they visited Corsica, Venice, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, Malta, Svalbard Norway, the Caribbean, and countless places throughout the United States and elsewhere.
He loved reading and was a compulsive, life-long learner. In recent years, he had developed and pursued an interest in Historical European Martial Arts. He was also a long-term student of the Japanese martial art of Aikido.
