David Mims Reid, 76, of Columbia, died Thursday, December 2, 2021. Born July 25, 1945, in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late James Jefferson Reid and Mary Lou Mims Reid.
He was a graduate of A.C. Flora High School and the University of South Carolina. His career began in 1967 with the newly formed South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. After serving in several capacities there, Mr. Reid completed his service with a 5-year tenure as Director of Tourism. For 8 years, he served as an executive assistant to Governor Richard W. Riley, monitoring energy and natural resource issues. He then joined the economic development arm of Santee Cooper and the state's electrical cooperatives, the South Carolina Power Team, as vice president of business relations, retiring after nearly twenty years of service.
Mr. Reid was married to and divorced from Susan Virginia Wade. He is survived by their children, David Randall Reid of Columbia, James Kenneth Reid (Patty) of Great Falls, SC, and Mary Mims Reid of Mount Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, James David Reid of Great Falls, SC, Amanda Kenney (Jeff) of Rock Hill, SC, Nancy Reeves of Richburg, SC, and Zoe Katherine Goldman of Mount Pleasant, SC; great grandson, Elliott Kenney. David was married to and divorced from Dorothy Hagood Grantham. He is also survived by his brother, J. Jefferson Reid of Tucson, AZ; as well as his sisters, Virginia Parker of Winston-Salem, NC, and Ellen Reid of Columbia.
The service for Mr. Reid will be held Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 2 o'clock PM at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 900 Calhoun Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Remembrance Fund of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church.
