David Ray Nimocks, Jr.
Help us celebrate David! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember David.
David Ray Nimocks, Jr was born on October 18th, 1928, in Greenwood, South Carolina. He was the son of Col David Ray Nimocks and Lalla Lee Lucius. He graduated high school from the Riverside Military Academy, where his father was the Associate Commandant. He enrolled at Georgia Tech as a bright-eyed 16-year-old and came of age during a time where many students were just returning from World War 2. He was a member of Kappa Alpha order, and always spoke fondly of those formative years and the relationships he made.
Upon graduation, Dave moved to Danville, VA where he split time between work at the Danville Cotton Mill and as a member of the Virginia National Guard. He always liked to quip that if you made it back after lunch at the Mill, you were considered a tenured employee. However, war came calling, and as a member of the National Guard, Dave was called to serve in the Korean War and dutifully performed his service for his country.
After his return from Korea, Dave settled down in Fayetteville, NC with the love of his life, Elisabeth Holt Burns. Married on November 4th, 1950, Dave and Lib fostered a romance that began as a chance encounter in ninth grade when he visited the Burns's Sandhills Farm. In Fayetteville, Dave worked alongside Lib's father to grow the family's Terminix franchise. Dave began working at Terminix in 1953 and helped grow a nascent business and industry into one of the largest family-owned pest control service providers in the country. His love of Terminix never ceased - you can find him on LinkedIn proudly displaying his 71 years of tenure at the company.
But more than anything, Dave cared most about his family. As a Yellow Jacket, some of his fondest memories were returning with his brother-in-law Howard Overby to the annual GT-UGA game each Thanksgiving. He would host family at his home in Fayetteville with a healthy serving of Barbecue Hut fried chicken, BBQ, and slaw. He would treat the grandkids to bingo and boiled shrimp at the beach. Most of all, he was always there to lend a helping hand. Whether it was a word of advice, a piece of old furniture you never knew you needed, or calling in a favor, he was always there to help. He had an undying love for his sister, Lalla Nimocks Overby and her family, for his four children, nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and the many others he touched throughout his life. He was such a generous person and most of his gifts were given anonymously. He never wanted the spotlight on his generosity.
He is survived by his daughters; Mary Flagg Nimocks Haugh (James) of Fayetteville, Elisabeth Nimocks Gooch (Emmett) of Wilmington, NC, Lalla Nimocks Harley (Donald, Jr) of Wilmington, NC, daughter in law Lynne Callahan Nimocks and grandchildren; David Ray Nimocks, IV, Joshua Graham Nimocks, Tyler Callahan Nimocks, Elisabeth Haugh Van Order, James Delaplane Haugh, Jr, Holt Gooch Smith, Caroline Gooch Reynolds, Donald Lee Harley III and Robert Burns Harley. He is also survived by his seventeen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elisabeth Holt Burns, and his son, David Ray Nimocks, III.
The family would like to thank the wonderful angels that cared for him: Johnnie Riggins, Debra Peterson, Merilyn Whitted, Teresa Harris, Millie Gaillard, Cynthia McCrary, Norma Zakers and Ola Mae Harold. Also, thank you to Dr. Martin Bacon and Dr. Richard Shereff and his wife Susan for their wonderful care.
There will be a graveside service conducted by Reverend Robert Alves of St. John's Episcopal Church at Cross Creek Cemetery #2 on January 3, 2025, at 11:30 am.
