Help us celebrate David! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember David.
DAVID MASON MINGS, 96, of Texas City passed away after a long, courageous battle with prostate cancer and a recent hip surgery. Born on March 24, 1929, in Texas City, Texas, David moved to Galveston with his parents at the age of six. He graduated from Ball High School and attended Texas A&M University before moving back to the island to work at Broadway Builders Supply. David was then hired by Union Carbide in Texas City and retired after over forty years of service, four of those years in Puerto Rico. David was a member of First Baptist Church in Galveston, then Highlands Baptist Church in La Marque, and later a member of First Baptist Church in Texas City. One of the most-godly men who ever walked this earth, David would never let any visitors to his home leave until he had said a prayer for them.
David is preceded in death by parents, Albert Mason Mings and Eva Irene Brown Mings, first wife and mother of his children, Joyce Siegert Mings, and sister, Leneade (Lyn) Mings Kirsten McClain Warner.
Survived by loving wife of over twenty-seven years, WANDA ABLES MINGS, a local Realtor. David often quipped "Wanda walked by and my heart went with her". He is also survived by children, Sarah Boyles (Jim), David (Bob) Mings (Susie), Ginger Ramsey, and Kathy Eldred (Kevin). Additionally, David considered Wanda's children, J. Michael (Mickey) Ables (Dorothy) and Lisa A. Ables Maxwell (Wayne) his own. David also leaves a legacy of fourteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
David had a wide circle of close friends and loved ones who were very special to him, including Hazel Surratt, who he considered a sister, Wade and Melinda Privratsky, and his extended Arkansas (Wanda's) family. A heartfelt thank you to those who loved and helped care for him, including Ginger Paredes, who was like a daughter, Mary Burgherini, Athea Williams, Jackie Banks, Destiny Banks, Danny Surratt, Kristi Smothers, and Carlos Gomez. Special acknowledgement to Dr. Robert Miller, Josh Mings, and Dennis Johns for their assistance in David's service. Grateful appreciation to Dr. Michelle Mercatante, whose unwavering concern for David's health resulted in his cancer diagnosis that had previously been undiagnosed by two urologists. We also want to thank the professional talents of Dr. Baji Jana, Dr. Joseph Sonstein, Dr. Sinju Jacob, Dr. Terry Siller and Dr. Farrah Siddiqui.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 27 at 2pm at Carnes Funeral Home in Texas City with services at 3pm and fellowship luncheon immediately afterward. In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory can be made to: First Baptist Church Texas City, 10000 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, Suite 2000, Texas City, TX 77591; Calion Assembly of God Church, P.O. Box 307, Calion, AR 71724 or any church or charity of your choice
In a cheerful voice, David went around singing...
Jesus came into my life and won't let me go
Jesus came into my heart, came into my soul
I once was so sad, but now I'm free and glad
Because Jesus came into my heart.
