David was the youngest of 4 children born to an agricultural farming family in West Texas. He grew up working on a tractor, helping on the family farm, and raising cattle. As a young boy, he spent lots of time playing with his sister on the haystack and building forts with hay bales. They enjoyed splashing around in the cold irrigation ditches on hot summer days and playing baseball together. From an early age, he enjoyed reading and continued this pass time throughout his life. He graduated high school in Crosbyton before going on to attend college at Sul Ross State University. He graduated with a degree in Animal Sciences in May of 1987. He began his career as a meat grader with the United States Department of Agriculture and continued doing what he loved for 35 years. He accomplished much over his career, including various USDA awards and commendations for leadership and training. Meat grading was something he was passionate about, and he often spoke about how much he enjoyed the opportunity he had teaching the Texas Tech Meat Judging Teams.
Though he enjoyed his career, David lived for his family. He often said that the proudest days of his life were the births of his 2 children and 4 grandchildren. He spent every minute he could with his arms wrapped about his grandbabies. Nothing brought him more joy than hearing about one of their new accomplishments, going to their sporting events, attending their birthday parties, or even just tucking them into bed. When he was with them, his heart was full. He was also an avid football fan, and his love for the Dallas Cowboys was unmatched. Sunday football games were always a very special occasion, and he would gather his family often to root for his favorite team. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, which he made sure to pass along to his children. He spent lots of time deer hunting with his son, and he and his daughter would spend hours fishing and enjoying nature. As his children grew up, he made sure to spend several weeks every year taking them camping at his favorite lake, Miller’s Creek. It was on these annual trips that many of his fondest memories were made. He also loved the game of golf and made sure to get on a golf course any chance that he could.
David always felt it was important to take the time to truly look at God’s creation and admire the beauty in it all. He loved enjoying the sunsets, the stillness of dawn, the majesty of the night sky, and the soft chirps of birds in the morning. He always talked about how close to God these special experiences brought him and how humbled he was to have been blessed with the opportunity to enjoy them. He was a man of faith and lived by the philosophy that we should enjoy every minute with the ones we love and to find our happiness in the simplicity of life. He often reflected on how much joy everything from reading his grandchildren a bedtime story, to sitting quietly near the water of a peaceful lake, to gathering for a holiday or a big family celebration, brought his heart.
David lived a life filled with love for his family and friends. He found humor in everything and was always ready to make someone laugh. It was one of the many things that made him so special. He had a natural ability to become instant friends with everyone he met, and it seemed as if anywhere he went someone knew him. He will forever be remembered as a loving Sibling, a fun Uncle, a fantastic Friend, an amazing Father, and an awesome PawPaw.
Those left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Alicia Fowler of Lubbock; his son, Joshua Fowler of Lubbock; his brothers, Ronald Fowler and Gerald Fowler of Lubbock; his sister, Debra Riley of Crosbyton; and four grandchildren, Nathaniel, Iris, Jasper, and Emerson.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the Crosbyton Church of Christ.
