Daniel Ambrose Shyne passed away peacefully with his family by his side, after a short but hard-fought battle, on January 29, 2026. Dan was born on Friday the 13th of August 1954 in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Norman A. and Michaela Bielmaier Shyne. He was the oldest of six children. In 1958 the family moved to Bozeman where his father attended MSU.
Growing up Dan and his siblings spent summers at the Bozeman City Pool as members of the Bozeman Bee Swim Team, winning meets across the state. Winters were spent on the ski slopes of Bridger Bowl, where he eventually joined the Ski Patrol. He attended Bozeman Schools, graduating in 1973.
While growing up he held two and sometimes three paper routes, saving his money to buy his first house when he was only 16. Thus, beginning a lifelong career in the rental business. Dan also worked at Summit Engineering and spent summers in Oregon, working on corporate farms and their irrigation systems. Attending Montana State University and Arizona State University, Dan began a career with Kenyon Noble as a driver and mechanic. Nights and weekends he drove gas trucks into Yellowstone National Park. He had an amazing work ethic.
During this time Dan began his stock car racing career with his dad and brothers at Hub of the Valley Speedway in Belgrade. He traveled around the state, winning both state and track championships. He loved all kinds of racing, no matter the type.
In September 1980, Dan and Vicki Petersen were married. They lived in Bozeman, and were able to purchase the house Dan grew up in, which he loved and took great pride in. They raised three children: Timothy Daniel Shyne, Danielle Marie Shyne, and Patrick Gene Shyne.
Dan was proud to join the Bozeman Fire Department in 1980 and enjoyed a long career, attaining the rank of Captain. During his time at the Fire Department, he attended the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, becoming a fire investigator. He also became an EMT with the department. He truly enjoyed his service to the community. After a severe injury, he retired. He was offered the opportunity to work in Big Sky, Montana at a new ski resort, continuing his work in concrete. He then began working with the water systems at the Yellowstone Club. This was the great joy of his life, as he got to ski every day for work! Dan retired in 2013 and spent many enjoyable hours working on his retirement home on Hauser Lake. He was proud to be able to help his children remodel each of their own homes.
Dan and Vicki enjoyed attending the annual Seattle Sea Fair to see the Blue Angels and the hydroplanes, where he could also take in a Mariner's game. He indulged his wife by trips to Las Vegas, Arizona in the winters, and occasionally Hawaii. Although he detested seafood and shellfish, he loved going clamming on the Washington coast at least twice a year.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marcelle. Dan will be greatly missed by his wife of 45 years Vicki; son, Timothy; daughter, Danielle; son, Patrick; and his grandchildren, Fiona, Aiden, Luke, Lorelei, Charlotte, Hunter, and Skylar; his beloved siblings, who were his best friends, Susan (Kirk), Mark (Angie), John (Sandra), and Karen (Gary) and other special family members: Laura, Monica, Sam, Steve, Connie, and Vanja, Chris, and Krystal.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 13th at 11 A.M. with lunch to follow at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service. www.dokkennelson.com
