How do you know Coy? Please share your stories and photos, and help spread the word about this page!
It is with love and in celebration of his wonderful life that we announce the passing of Coy Eugene "Gene" Davis of Gilmer, Texas, on August 30, 2024, at the age of 61 years.
He was born on January 17, 1963, to Coy and Ruth Ann Heatherly Davis. He married his best friend, Janice Marie Ward, on December 28, 1984. This year marks 40 years of their life together. Gene and Janice have one daughter, Brittany Ann Davis Gowin, and son in law, Randy Gowin.
Gene is the hardest worker most people ever have the pleasure to meet. At the age of 7 he was already climbing under houses helping his dad with the family business, Davis Electric, where he would go on to become a journeyman electrician for the next 28 years. One of his most memorable jobs was the new Gilmer National Bank. In 1986 he opened Gene's Tree Service and worked in the evenings and weekends. As hard of work as it was, it was also his favorite--the adrenaline rush of looking out across the town and the calm and peace at the top of a 90 foot pine tree. When his dad passed in 2009, Gene inherited the family business and was forced to step out of his intellectual comfort zone and pass the State of Texas master electrician exam. Even through the four years of his cancer battle, he worked as a master electrician and owner of Davis Electric until April 2024.
Gene was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was baptized on September 28, 1984. He and Janice were sealed for time and all eternity in the Dallas, Texas temple on April 10, 1993. Throughout his years of service in the church he held many callings of which he served steadfastly. It would be impossible to count the many service projects Gene either led or participated in, and the numerous lives and families he blessed.
Those left to carry on his loving example include his wife Janice of Gilmer, his daughter Brittany, her husband Randy, their son Colin and his wife Jordin, and daughter Hannah, all of Emory.
He is preceded in death by his father, Coy, his mother Ruth, and his sister, Vicki Lou Davis Jester.
The family extends gratitude and love to Dr. Robert Droder and the incredibly kind staff of UT Health East Texas Hope Cancer Center. Additionally, the family is grateful to all the staff of the UT Health Tyler North and Main campuses. To the many friends and family who have been there since day one, and those who have swarmed into action to aid the family, we are eternally grateful, love you, and wish you all the best the universe has to offer.
Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Saturday, September 7, at 10:00 AM. Interment to follow at Rosewood Park. Visitation will be at McWhorter Funeral Home on Friday, September 6, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 PM.
