Col. Lowell Dale "Jake" Jacobson, US Army Reserve, Ret. was born on June 16, 1937, to Lowell Orville and Marie Jacobson in Bridgewater, South Dakota. He grew up in nearby Alcester, South Dakota with sisters Melva and Muriel. Lowell attended the University of South Dakota where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics/Engineering. There he met Beverly Stearns and they married in Beresford, South Dakota in June 1959. He continued his enlistment in the United States Army Reserves, retiring with the rank of Colonel after thirty years of service. During his early career, Lowell worked in San Francisco, California for the IRS. The Jacobsons were charter members of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Mill Valley, California. In the early 1960's Lowell's career took him to Washington State to work as an auditor on the Hanford Project for Battelle Northwest and later Westinghouse. Jake led and served on the parish board of Richland Lutheran Church and the Pacific Northwest and National Synods of the American Lutheran Church. In 1972, Jake was the presiding founder of the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy, now known as Chaplaincy Health Care, in Richland, Washington where daughter Jennifer is now a staff Chaplain. Lowell and Beverly remained in Washington until taking early "retirement" to work with Lutheran Disaster Response teams rebuilding homes on the Island of Kauai following Hurricane Iniki. They were faithful members of Lihue Lutheran Church. The Jacobsons maintained a mainland home base in Sunriver OR as they continued their disaster response work following Hurricane Andrew in the US Virgin Islands. Long-time supporters of Habitat for Humanity, Jake and Beverly revisited his farming roots staying for several months at a time at Koinonia Farm in Americus, Georgia working alongside Habitat founder Millard Fuller and former President Jimmy Carter. Later they continued their work in Shreveport, Louisiana with the Fuller Center for Housing. Jake and Beverly enjoyed traveling the United States in their motorcoach on special trips with grandchildren until settling at Heritage Ranch in Fairview, Texas in 2004. They became members of First United Methodist Church in Allen where he was an active member of the Wednesday Men Talking fellowship and the Harmony Sunday School Class. Following a brief illness and hospice, Jake died on February 21, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lowell Orville and Marie Jacobson; infant son, Lowell Douglas Jacobson; sister, Melva Leafstedt; and brother-in-law, Dr. Stuart (Muriel) Leafstedt. Lowell is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beverly Stearns Jacobson; Daughters, Jennifer Jacobson and Julie (James) Coney; Grandchildren, Jacob (Randi) Law, Spencer Hendrickson, Jessica (Matt Lundstrom) Jones, Bethany (Aaron) Brezik, Hannah Law VanHooser, and Lydia Jacobson; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Muriel Leafstedt; 2 brothers-in-law, Roy (Jan) Stearns and James Leafstedt; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home Chapel, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013.
