Help us celebrate Col. Phillip! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Col. Phillip.
Phillip Clyde Walker was born to the late Arthur Francis Walker and Hilma Dell Atwood Walker, in Saint Joseph, MO on October 20, 1931. Phil enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after high school, where he served with distinction for 27 years including tours of duty in the Korean and Vietnam (2) wars, retiring as Director of Telecommunications at the rank of Colonel in 1977. While serving in the Marine Corps, Phil studied and earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. After retiring from the Marine Corps, Phil continued to work in the private sector for various defense contractors including General Research Corp, Versitron, Inc, Electrospace, Inc. and AT&T before establishing his own company, C3 Metrics. Phil fully retired in 2012 at the age of 81. He loved to learn and work.
Phil was blessed with a large and loving family. At the age of 28 he married his best friend, Ann Rayhill Laughon on April 18, 1959, in Portsmouth, VA and together they raised their three children with patience, discipline, humor and humility. Phil often shared with them his experiences as a Marine officer so they could use that knowledge as they got older and started their own families. Leading by example, Phil remained a devout and loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather since the passing of his wife Ann in 1990.
Throughout his life Phil was a leader and a true patriot, with a keen, creative, analytical mind, and a passion for problem solving. His presence here on earth surely made the world a better place. Many will miss his sage advice.
Phil is survived by his son, Phillip Gregory Walker and Julie Fambro of Sterling, VA; his daughters Andrea Walker Butterfield and her husband Christopher L. Butterfield of Round Hill, VA and Carolyn Walker Shortt and her husband Dale L. Shortt of Berryville, VA; his grandchildren Ashley, Michael, Brooke, Matthew, Brad, William, Kristen, Ryan, Taylor, and Anna; and his great grandchildren Carter, Isla, Paisley, Hunter, Luke, Riley, Ryan, Adam and Julia. Phil is preceded by his wife, Ann, his brother Ronald, and his parents Arthur & Hilma.
