Hazel Brown Young Zachar was born near Jefferson, Iowa, on January 27, 1922, to Arthur and Bertha Stewart Brown. She died on November 2, 2023, at the age of 101.
Hazel attended Iowa State College and then the University of Colorado for a B.A. degree. She continued her studies under the Cadet Nurse program for a B.S. in Nursing. She worked as a nurse in Jefferson, Iowa; Anchorage, Alaska; Riverside, California; and Rochester, Minnesota.
In 1948, Hazel married Captain Bert Young in Anchorage when Alaska was still a Territory. After Bert's death in 1953, she joined the Army with the specialty of Army Health Nurse. While in the Army, Hazel attended the University of California at Los Angeles for a Masters in Nursing. In 1964, she married Lieutenant Colonel Martin Zachar.
Hazel retired from the Army in 1974 with the rank of Colonel. Her service awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
As a member of First Presbyterian Church in El Paso, Texas, Hazel served as Deacon, Elder, and president of Presbyterian women. She moved to The Towers on Park Lane in San Antonio in 1995, and lived there until her death. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio.
Hazel had been a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 76 years. She was a member of Chapter Y, San Antonio. Through the P.E.O. Sisterhood, in 1993 she established an annual High School Graduation Scholarship in her hometown of Jefferson, Iowa. In 2012, Hazel established a scholarship program with the Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
At the celebration of Hazel's 100th birthday, she was awarded the Commission of the Yellow Rose of Texas by Governor Greg Abbott, in recognition of her exceptional community service.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Bertha Brown; first husband, Bert Young; second husband, Martin Zachar; sister, Beth Rideout; and sister, Marjorie Harris. Survivors include nephew Marvin Bryant (Karen), Miami, Florida; nephew Karl Harris (Jeannie), Santa Barbara, California; nephew David Harris (Kay Tuttle), Fresno, California; and niece Diane Harris, Oceanside, California.
