Claudia was the first of four children born to Harry and Lois (LaGrand) Brown in Seattle, Washington on 18 May 1939. She attended Columbia Grade School, Sharpless Junior High, Franklin High School and the University of Washington, graduating with a degree in Political Science. Claudia introduced her three siblings to the classics (books, movies, art and music), fashion, and the importance of education. Claudia introduced her brother Rick to the world of Edgar Rice Burroughs who, he feels, was her favorite author.
In 1965, Claudia began her career with the United States of America, Department of State, as Foreign Service secretary in the Press Office for the Asia Bureau. She became a Foreign Service Officer and served in the Philippines, Geneva, Mexico City, Panama City, Mogadishu, and Monrovia. On 1 October 1993, after completing 28 years of service, Claudia retired.
Before returning home, Claudia purchased 2.5 acres of a hillside overlooking Hood Canal near Tahuya, Washington. When she returned to Seattle in the Spring of 1994, she brought drawings of a house she wanted to build on the property. She never built the house, but instead cared for her parents until both passed away. After the family home was sold, Claudia moved to an apartment in the Magnolia neighborhood.
Claudia's health began to decline after she moved to Magnolia and in January 2010 she was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia.
Surviving Claudia in her immediate family are brothers, David L.F. Brown and his wife Sharon, Richard C. Brown and his wife Lois; her sister Kathleen Mary Smith; her nieces Kimberly Brenneman and her husband Bo, Kathleen Spicer and her husband Bob, Arlana Helle and her husband Greg; her nephews Nathan Smith and his wife Sarah, Austin Smith and his wife Brynn; her great-nephews Tony and Tyler Brenneman and Emmett Smith; her great-nieces Meghan and Brynne Spicer, Catherine Helle-Moyer and Elizabeth Helle.
