Clara Foy Derrington, 95, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2021 at St. Catherine's Village Retirement Community in Madison, Mississippi. She was born on February 13, 1926 in Decatur, MS to Ida Mae Blount Foy and Malcolm Foy.
She graduated from Central High School in Jackson in 1943. She attended Millsaps College and graduated cum laude in 1946 with a B.S. in Chemistry. She worked with the US Army Corp of Engineers/Waterways Station as a chemist in the Concrete & Research Division.
Clara was a member of various bridge clubs during her life where she made continuous lifetime friendships while honing her bridge-playing skills. During her retirement years she enjoyed volunteering at Hinds General Hospital (currently Merit Health) and River Oaks Hospital as well as Contact Telephone Crisis Ministry where she received a Lifetime Service Award for 33 years of service. During her retirement years she was also very involved in a local Homemaker Club where she learned to sew, make quilts and create numerous crafts. In 2000, she received the "Golden Deeds Award" from the South Jackson Exchange Club for her many years of serving others.
She devoted many years at Epworth Methodist Church in Jackson and served as a 4th grade Sunday School teacher among other activities in the church. In addition, she was a member of Madison United Methodist when she and Wayne moved to Madison in 1996. She was predeceased by her husband, Wayne Derrington, in December 2004. They had been married for 54 years at his death.
In 2009, Clara moved to St. Catherine's Village/Independent Living where she loved her new environment along with new friends and numerous activities. In 2016, after her stroke she received comprehensive care in Siena and Tuscany Skilled Care at St. Catherine's.
Clara is survived by her daughter, Dixie Myrick (Mike) and her grandchildren Darah McDonald (Chris) and Claire Walton Anderson along with two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Dan Derrington (Rita) and grandson, Danny Derrington. She is also survived by her sister, Sybil James and nephews, Eric James (Tree) and Malcolm James.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at Parkway Funeral Home with a service following at 2:00 pm.
