Christopher Paul Jones, 66, of Saluda, passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Saluda Nursing Center.
Born in Aiken, SC, Chris was the son of Paul Tilman Jones and Dr. and Mrs. Richard and Nancy Carter of Greenwood. After graduating from Greenwood High School in 1975 where he played football for the legendary Pinky Babb, Chris joined the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Parris Island, SC, Camp LeJune, NC, and Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station in Honolulu. Chris's Marine Corps service allowed him to see the world on a Mediterranean cruise and a West Pacific cruise.
Chris returned to Saluda in 1979 and joined the 122nd Engineers National Guard unit in 1981. Attaining the rank of sergeant, Chris was named Soldier of the Year in 1994. He served with that unit until his health forced retirement in 1999. Considered a Vietnam Era veteran, Chris attended Piedmont Tech on the G. I. Bill and earned degrees in engineering technology and HVAC. Chris worked for over twenty years at Amick Farms. He was also employed by Carolina Pride and Michelin. He retired from Michelin.
Chris was an avid fisherman and hunter. He hunted whatever was in season, often driving his family crazy with his new turkey call on Christmas morning. He was a gardener and would offer his time to Aunt Anne to plow her garden every spring. For many years Chris raised Pomeranians. He enjoyed playing golf, often teaming in local tournaments with his brothers-in law, Ralph Shealy and Jamie Shealy and his son, Morgan Jones. They never won big-time, but they sure had fun. Chris was a loyal Gamecock fan.
Chris is survived by his son, Morgan (Holly), daughter, Mayson Donlon (Jason), sisters, Sheila Shealy (Thomas), Catherine Carter Webb, brothers, Joe Carter (Mary), Edward Carter, Michael Carter. He is survived by his grandchildren, Deacon Donlon, Madden Donlon, Emoree Donlon, Rhyden Donlon, Hannah Moore, Bryson Backman, and Kellen Backman, his ex-wife and mother of his children, Dibbie Shealy, and many nieces and nephews.
Chris was predeceased by his father and his granddaughter, Landry Donlon.
