Chester Ernest Menter "Chet", 96, passed away on September 24, 2022 at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, NH. He was born September 19, 1926 in Londonderry, NH, son of the late Alfred Menter and Katie (Brown) Menter.
Chet grew up in Londonderry, NH and was one of five children in his family. He entered the US Navy at the age of 17 and served during WWII on the USS Abercrombie Destroyer Escort. He served honorably in the Navy from 1943-1946 discharged with the rank of Torpedoman's Third Class. He later enlisted into the US Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He served honorably in the Air Force from 1952-1953 and was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Chet met Doris Rand at Spaulding & Frost in Fremont. They got married and had one son together. Sadly in the 1970's, Doris passed away from cancer. Chet worked most of his life as an auto mechanic. Initially, he was employed by I.C. Reed with Ivan, Carl and Joe. Later he worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from 1986 until his retirement. After his retirement, he worked part-time for Wayne Welch at Radio Grove Hardware in Raymond. Chet resided in Fremont for over 50 years from 1964-2017.
Chet was a longtime active member of the Tucker Masonic Lodge in Raymond where he was Past Master 4 times. He was a member of the Maple-Wheadon VFW and the Hurd-Welch American Legion both of Raymond. He was a former active member of the Brentwood Baptist Church.
His hobbies included flying radio controlled model airplanes where he belonged to several flying clubs and gardening. Chet also purchased an Old 1919 Model-T which he restored and eventually sold.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Dorothy Goodwin, Merle Menter, George Menter and Allen "Sam" Menter.
Chet is survived by his son, David Menter, grandson, Bill Kenyon and his wife, Erika, great-grandson, Billy Kenyon and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond, NH.
A private graveside service will be held in the Village Cemetery, Fremont, NH.
