Chester "Chet" Anthony Gronski, born on January 17, 1936 in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain with his children by his side on Saturday, February 22, 2020 after a valiant and long battle with cancer. Chet was the son of the late Chester J. and Helen (Tolarski) Gronski of New Britain and the husband of Arlene Gronski. Chet was a long-time resident of Newington, Connecticut where he lived with Arlene, for the past 53 years.
Chet graduated from James M. Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania in 1953. Shortly after high school Chester enlisted in the United States Army and was a radioman while stationed in Germany. Upon returning home to New Britain, CT, "Chet the Jet", as he liked to be called, started working in the mail room for Fafnir Bearings Company in New Britain. He then later apprenticed as a Draftsman which he enjoyed doing for the remainder of his career. Chet was awarded several patents during his tenure at Fafnir.
Chet enjoyed bowling and played in leagues in his younger days. He loved working on cars with his son Michael. He enjoyed going to the shooting range at Bell City Rifle Club in Bristol where he was a member and he continued to do this until very recently. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of guns to anyone who would listen to him but especially his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching the stock market and investing, which he did avidly. He also enjoyed caring for his many roses in the garden.
Chet is survived by his loving wife, Arlene Gronski, his son, Michael Gronski and his wife Cindy of Newington, Deanna Gronski of South Windsor and her son Logan Tyminski, with whom "Papa Chet" had a special bond. Also surviving Chet are his grandchildren Nicole Ward of South Carolina and her son Colsyn Ward and Michael "Mickey" Gronski Jr. of Plainville, his aunt Gertrude Binker of Pennsylvania, his sister in law Shirley Pelletier of California and several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dr. Wylie Hosmer and the staff at the Cancer Center of Central Connecticut and the critical care unit doctors and nurses at the Hospital of Central Connecticut for all their support, care and respect during this difficult time. We also like to thank Florence who has helped Chet and Arlene at home and with whom Chet had many long conversations with.
There will be no calling hours. He will be laid to rest privately with military honors. Donations may be made in Chester's name to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
