Charlotte was born on March 19, 1948, to Sylvanus and Sadie (Schamens) Buck on a family farm near Hayti in Hamlin County.
Being the eldest of seven children she helped to care for her sisters and brothers. She attended country school and also Hayti School.
Charlotte was united in marriage to Earl Kays on November 4, 1948, at the Hamlin Court House. Earl and Charlotte farmed around the Bryant area until his death in 1983. At this time, Charlotte moved into Bryant and went to work in the laundry department of Parkview Care Center. She was a hard worker all her life and wouldn't have retired at the age of 73, if not for a surgery.
Charlotte and Earl had two daughters, Mary (Reed) Skelton and Rose (Terry) Chapin. Later, in 1968, they were blessed to have a young man, Dave Gubbins, come to live with them and be the son they had always wanted.
Always spunky, with a strong "will" to live, she continued to amaze her family as she always bounced back from medical issues. She worked so hard each and every time to recover as she wanted to go home! She loved her home!
Charlotte always enjoyed family and friends dropping by for a visit and maybe even a game of Rummy. She was the life of family gatherings- you just didn't know what she might say! Oh how she loved the color red and bling! Always sparkly!
Charlotte liked watching the Minnesota Twins, old westerns and game shows, but she had no time for those "soapbox stories"! She loved good old country western music and dancing.
And then, wow! What an animal lover. Throughout her life she enjoyed God's creatures from the chicken, cows, pigs and such on the farm to her many cats throughout the years. She needed to take care of them, fed them all well and loved them so. Many strays made their way to her step and later to the shelter of the shed. She said, "Someone needs to care for them and I want to!" Then there's Bow, Wyatt's dog, she looked forward to the scratch at the door. He thinks he's a lap dog and would share her chair, the draw back was, she fed him too well! She cared for him while Wyatt was on a trip with Waylon's family, Bow gained 10 pounds!
Charlotte loved all her family so very much. She was an inspiration to many and will be a treasured memory forever. Her love lives through us!
Family is planning to have a Celebration of Charlotte's life in the summer.
