Charlotte Mae Johnson was born on November 19, 1949, to Arnold and Miriam (Mudder) Johnson in Yankton, SD. She was baptized at Trinity Presbyterian in Avon, SD. Charlotte attended James Country School in rural Avon. On her 11th birthday, the family moved to Lennox, SD, where Charlotte graduated in 1968. She attended South Dakota State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics education in 1972.
Charlotte then moved to Webster, SD, where she served as the home economics instructor from 1972-2003 and served as the adviser for 28 proms. She treasured the relationships with her students and loved to connect with them through Facebook. One of the crowning achievements of her career was publishing Charlotte's Cookbook.
On June 19, 1976, Charlotte married Bernard "Butch" Hoverstadt, Jr., and the following year, she joined Christ the King Catholic Church. They welcomed two children, Adrienne and Benjamin, into the world.
Charlotte enjoyed community involvement. She served as secretary at the Webster Area Chamber of Commerce from 1996-2008 and was very active and served in leadership roles in numerous community organizations. The Catholic Daughters of America, Christ the King Altar Society, church choir, Catholic Foresters, SD Past Regents of Catholic Daughters, American Legion Auxiliary, Kiwanis, Progressive Reading Circle, Red Hats, Golden Age Club, Webster Development Corp., and more all benefitted from her tireless leadership and drive to make her community better.
Charlotte also loved to scrapbook, garden, and entertain. What Charlotte enjoyed more than anything, though, was her grandchildren. She was an extraordinary grandma?hosting tea parties, helping with 4-H projects, singing bedtime songs, reading books, and lavishing her grandchildren with love.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Butch; her children Adrienne (Todd) McKeown of Harrisburg, SD, and Benjamin (Rachel) Hoverstadt of Watertown, SD; her grandchildren Maggie, Ryan, and Luke McKeown and Elsie and Easton Hoverstadt. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Coester Funeral Home & Cremation Service is entrusted with the arrangements.
