Charles David Sword
How do you know Charles? Please share your stories and photos, and help spread the word about this page!
Charles was born April 21, 1937, in Blairs Valley. His father was Harry Franklin Sword. His mother was Pearl Lulu (Carbaugh) Sword.
Charles is survived by three children, David (Michelle) Sword, Carolyn (Curtis) Carbaugh, and Matthew (Courteney) Sword; 5 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by one brother, Frederick Sword, of Hagerstown, MD.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Edith Marie (Blair) Sword; 2 grandsons, Curtis Jr. and Daniel Carbaugh; four sisters, Leah Sword, Hilda Bricker, Daisy Fitz, and Marylou Yeager; and 2 brothers, Carl and Robert Sword.
He was part of the Clear Spring High School class of 1955.
Straight out of high school, he worked for a couple of years on his sister's farm in the Punch Bowl outside of Mercersburg, PA. He would go on to work at Heisey Orchard, Hagerstown Shoe Company, and then Leroy E. Myers, Inc., where he learned the masonry trade.
From 1960 to 1962, Charles would serve in the US Army in Germany and Czechoslovakia Border. After returning home from active duty, he married Edith Marie Blair on December 28, 1962.
In 1971, he began working for United Masonry, Inc., where he would go on to become a foreman completing several masonry projects in Northern VA and the DC area before semi retiring and helping his son with his masonry business and working on the farm.
Charles' greatest accomplishment came one Sunday evening at Blair's Valley First Church of God, when he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He had the privilege of serving on the church council as an Elder, Deacon, Men's Sunday School Teacher, and on the Cemetery Board. In his later years, he became a member of the Hagerstown First Church of God.
Charles loved Blair's Valley and ended up raising his family in the house where he was born. On April 5, 2022, angels carried Charles into heaven where I am sure he was greeted by his wife, Edith, and met his Savior Jesus Christ face to face. And he lives happily ever after for all eternity.
The family wants to thank the staff of Twin Oaks Assisted Living and Hospice for the love and wonderful care they provided for our dad.
