Mr. Charles Henry Kirtland III, age 80, of Rome, GA, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2021. Mr. Kirtland was born on November 12, 1940 in Mobile, AL, son of the late Charles H. Kirtland, Jr. and Doris E. Kirtland. He had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County for the greater part of his life. Mr. Kirtland graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile, AL and served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps and Reserves. Mr. Kirtland graduated from Auburn University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering. Coming to Rome, GA in 1967, he had worked as a manufacturing engineer with GE for over 30 years. He also worked at the HON Company, Engineered Fabrics Corp, Meggitt, and recently volunteered at Redmond Regional Medical Center. Mr. Kirtland was a founding member of the Rome Sailing Club. A truly talented engineer, he enjoyed sailing, RC planes, airboats, ultralights, motorcycles, and visiting with his family and friends. Mr. Kirtland is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Rick Meredith of Marietta, GA; his son, Brian Kirtland; five grandchildren including Jenna Sirmans (Tanner), Billy Meredith, Anna, Isaac, and Michael Kirtland, and his sisters Pam Morris (Eddie) and Pat Kirtland of Mobile, AL. Mr. Kirtland is preceded in death by his wife Patricia Kirtland. A memorial will be held for the family.
