Mr. Charles Garrard, age 94 of Robinson, IL passed away on Thursday August 11, 2022, at 12:00 PM at Marshall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Marshall, IL, following several months of failing health.
Born June 11, 1928, in Honey Creek Township, Crawford County, IL, Charles was the oldest of eight children born to Raymond A. "Billy" and Florence I. (Inboden) Garrard.
Charles was a graduate of Robinson High School, Class of 1946. As a very young man, Charles worked on the farm with his dad. After High School, Charles decided to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army and served with the Army of Occupation-Japan from 1946 to 1947. Upon returning home, he immediately took employment with L.S. Heath & Sons in the Creamery and later, the Candy Plant from 1948 thru 1952, where he met his wife, Jean. In the Spring of 1951, Charles married Lenora Jean (Minnick) and they began their 71-year married life together. From the Candy Plant at Heath, he immediately went to work for the Marathon Oil Company Refinery in Robinson IL, on the Crude Unit where he worked from 1952 - 1972 and later transferred to the Machine Shop from 1972 until retirement in 1986. We used the term retirement, but Charles' lifestyle was anything but retirement. He pumped and maintained oil wells on the family farm, farmed in limited fashion, built, and finished a new home on the farm and was hardly retired at all. Time caught up with him and he slowly loosened the reins. Charles's memberships included the VFW Post #4549, Robinson, IL, the E.M. Coulter Post #69, American Legion, Robinson, IL, and the Crawford County Farm Bureau. He and his wife Jean both attended the Zion United Methodist Church.
