Rev. Dr. Charles William Davenport, 69, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.
He was born on November 7, 1953, in Williamston, SC to the late Conrad and Helen Davenport.
Dr. Davenport loved to read and was a history buff. He made a point to tell his children often that he was proud of them. He adored his grandchildren and they loved and adored their Papa. During his 45+ years in the ministry, Dr. Davenport officiated numerous baptisms, weddings, and funeral services. He taught lay pastors the Old and New Testament, and at community colleges, teaching the Old and New Testaments. He served in the Evening Rotary Club in Gastonia and has served in local Kiwanis. He was the Minister of Visitation at First Presbyterian in Gastonia. Dr. Davenport was called to serve at the following churches; Warrenton Presbyterian Church in Abbeville, SC, Long Creek Presbyterian Church in Kings Mtn., NC, Wallace Presbyterian Church in Wallace, NC, First Presbyterian Church in Forest City, NC, West Avenue Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, NC, First Presbyterian Church, Minister of Visitation, Gastonia, NC, Union Theological Seminary, Charlotte, NC, and was the Associate Executive Presbyter in the Western North Carolina Presbytery.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 48 years, Betty Davenport; children and their families, Dr. Bryan Davenport and wife Vanessa, their children, Conrad, Callum, Truman, Rev Jason Davenport and wife Angela, their children, Nathaniel and Allison, Carrie Davenport Anderson and husband Brendan and their children, Gavin and Annalise.
A Memorial Service officiated by the Reverend's Daniel J. Commerford, Lance Perry and David Albertson, will be held Sunday, February 26, 2023, at 3:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 1621 E. Garrison Blvd. Gastonia, NC 28054. A visitation will follow the service in the church Fellowship Hall.
