Chuck DaMart passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 1, 2021, at St John's Hospital in Oxnard, CA.
Chuck was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Charles and LuLu DaMart. He grew up in Minneapolis with his two older sisters. Chuck attended Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1957, he married Faye A Groves and had 4 children. He sold Successful Farming Magazine Subscriptions, became a top salesman for American Automobile Association and owned Dawn Boat & Motor Company. He was also in the United States Naval Reserve. He bought his first house at the age of 21 In Edina, Minnesota.
In 1965, he drove across country to California with Faye and their four kids in the back seat. He started work for Smith-Emery Company as a Concrete Inspector. Often when driving around Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley he would point proudly to high rise buildings he worked on.
In 1967, they purchased a 2nd house on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. Chuck and Faye separated and Faye and the kids stayed in Minnesota while Chuck returned to California where he began building- first single family homes, then apartments, and finally commercial buildings.
He met Susan (Wagner) in 1972, the love of his life, while visiting his kids in Minnesota and they have been together ever since. They were married in 1975, lived in Studio City then built their house and moved to Camarillo in 1990. Their love for one another grew stronger over the years and was an inspiration to all who knew them. Avid travelers, they visited all 50 states in their Motorhome and traveled to 50 + countries. They spent 47 happy years together.
Chuck was a successful builder and developer, but took greater pride in his successful relationships with friends and family. He kept his Minnesota roots close throughout his life and had lifelong friendships going back to junior high.. Chuck welcomed everyone with open arms and a hug. He lived his life fully and would often tell those who knew him, how blessed and lucky he was to have the life he loved.
Chuck never let any grass grow under his feet, if there was something that needed to be done, he did it. The day before his death he played golf and the morning he passed, he was getting ready to do his 2 mile walk at the Outlet Mall. He was a man of many passions. including flying his Cessna, scuba diving, golfing, and taking his daily nap. He was an avid enthusiast of history, especially World War II. He loved to utilize his creative thinking skills, design buildings, make the best gravy known to mankind and provide memorable trips for the whole family.
He was a hands-on guy who could fix anything.
His ability to listen and help solve problems was incredible. There were no strangers in his life, if you met him, you became a friend. He loved talking on the phone and enjoyed a 5 o' clock martini. He had a quiet, soft-spoken nature and was respected by all who knew him.
He shared amazing stories with us about jumping on the back of the streetcars in Minneapolis, building his own Houseboat (which actually floated), hunting trips, and world travels.
He would say "work smart, not hard" and "on the road again."
He will be missed and remain forever in our hearts, but he has left us with a beautiful reward. The reward of his example, his generosity, his words backed by his actions, an example of how to live your life with integrity and dignity. His love for all will live on.
We are honored to call him our Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Friend.
