Cathy Powell passed away April 7th after a long, hard fought battle with cancer. She was born in Gainesville, GA on March 18, 1950; she grew up in Gainesville and later moved to Athens, GA where she attended Athens High. In 1970, she met and married the love of her life, Michael Powell. Together they built a successful hydroseeding business in Lithonia, Ga. She was a smart and savvy businesswoman known fondly as "boss Lady." She paved the way for women in the construction business which was seldom heard of in the 1970's. She was a caring and loyal wife to her husband, an adoring mother to her children, and a loving influence for her grandchildren, niece, and nephew, with all of them affectionately referring to her as "Me Maw." In addition to her family, she had many loves: Cooking, Gardening, the Gulf of Mexico, and horses. She spent many years traveling around the country with her family showing their horses. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Irene and Douglas Owensby; and father, Carl Leonard Sund. She is survived by her loving husband, Michael Powell; son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Melissa Powell; daughters, Andrea Powell and Lisa Lassiter; brother and sister-in-law, David and Jenny Owensby; granddaughters, Victoria and Alexandria Lassiter, Alyssa Powell; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Ansley and Clay Lester; nephew and niece, Matthew and Jessica Owensby; numerous family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 15th at Gibbs Memorial Baptist Church in Bostwick, GA. There will be a 2 PM visitation and a service at 3 PM.
