Cathy Jean Husman, aka "Grand" & "Kitty" by family and close friends, was born to parents Alice "Ruby" Jenkins and Charles Delmer Melton on April 13, 1950, in Rutherford, North Carolina. She is survived by her husband David, daughter Leilani, granddaughters Sophia, Fiona, & Edith, and siblings Tamara, Scott, & Russel. Cathy was always driven by her work and compassion towards others. As she once said, "Of all things, compassion is the most important." When she wasn't helping people, or working hard, she would be watching comedy or enjoying quality time with her husband David. She was the glue that held and brought her family together. Cathy was a loving and kind mother, grandmother, and wife. She would do anything for the people she loved and cared for, as if it were second nature to her. Her smile alone would light up a room. In High School, Cathy was a cheerleader. After High School she decided she wanted to go to school for nursing, until she found her passion in the business world. In the eighties she lived in L.A. and was the Executive Vice President of the Hard Rock Cafes. In the nineties, she moved to Chicago to open her own restaurant, The Old Carolina Crab House, in North Pier. To then open, Vern's Garage and Widow Newton's Tavern in Navy Pier. She met her husband, David Husman in 2000 and they had been together ever since. They worked side by side, until her last days. Cat (another nickname) was diagnosed with ALS in 2021 and passed away, peacefully, on February 15th, 2023 @ 1: 39pm in her home in Florida with immediate family by her side. Although Cathy was taken early from this world, she wouldn't have wanted us to mourn her loss, but rather celebrate the life she had lived and to honor her compassion in our everyday lives. A foundation is being created in Florida, in Cathy's memory for ALS research. In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated to the ongoing research of ALS.
