Catherine Sylvia Wilson Jeffries, 96, died on Tuesday December 1, 2020 at Davis Health Care. She was born in Hallsboro, NC on October 31, 1924. She was the oldest daughter of Bonnie Ray Wilson and Arthur L. Wilson, Sr.
She graduated from Lumberton High School in 1941; attended W.C.U.N.C. at Greensboro, NC (1941-1942), Graduated Cum Laude from Atlantic Christian College, Wilson, NC 1962 with a BS in health and physical Education; Graduated Magna Cum Laude with a master's from East Carolina University in 1964 in education, health and physical education; received a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 1980.
She taught health and physical education at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, NC for thirty years. She received tenure and associate professor in 1979. She taught upper level PE major courses, teacher education courses, fitness, aerobic dance, ballroom dance, and the total program of the American National Red Cross swimming and water safety courses. She held memberships in AAHPER, NCAHPERD, AAUP, Alpha Chi Honor Society. She was a certified Health Education Specialist. She was a Water Safety Instructor for the Wilson County chapter of the American National Red Cross 1962-1989.
Dr. Jeffries Coached the Bulldogs women's softball team 1980-1984. The women's softball field at Barton College is named "Jeffries Field" in her honor. Dr. Jeffries suggested to the Athletic Committee that Atlantic Christian College needed a drug program to educate and monitor athletes. She researched and composed the first drug plan for athletes at Atlantic Christian College. It was accepted by the committee and implemented in the athletic program 1986.
Her husband of 56 years, Herbert M. Jeffries, Jr., preceded her in death on March 30, 1999. He was the general manager of Belk. Together they had a son Rusty B. Jeffries (Sue) of Wilmington, NC and a daughter Jense Jeffries Harries (J.C., Jr.) of Wilson, NC.
In addition to her children she is survived by grandchildren, Jason Jeffries, Clint Harris (Tammy), Bert Harris, great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Julianne, Kendall, Brylan, sisters, Bonnie Daniels (Warren), Dorothy Brown, Kay Gerald, sister-in-law Margaret Wilson, many nieces and nephews, including Jeff and Pat Chesson, and Babs and Jim Gallion. She was preceded in death by her brother Arthur Wilson, Jr.
Dr. Jeffries was a member of First Baptist Church in Wilson, NC.
