Carolyn Patricia McGhee died peacefully at her home in Armuchee, Georgia on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, surrounded by her beloved family and her pet Pekingese dog Anna.
Pat was born on November 19, 1940. She was preceded in death by her parents Felton Dillon Duffey and Rossie Clanton Duffey, her brother Felton, and sister-in-law, Sheila Duffy. Pat was married to Horace "Mac" McGhee on August 2, 1958. He lovingly referred to her as "Duff." Mac passed away on April 2, 2020. In her younger years, Pat was trained as a hairdresser. Later, she and Mac owned and operated the Saga Motel in Rome, Georgia, for fourteen years.
A strong Christian faith carried her through the many difficulties of life. She has been a dedicated member of Friendship Baptist Church. She loved to sing in the choir and attend her Sunday School Class - The Ready Class. Pat was always available to her friends and enjoyed driving them around on their many adventures.
In her free time, Pat was an avid gardener and looked forward to the bounty of her fruit trees and blueberry bushes. She was an expert cook who loved to share her food and her recipes. Pat loved to visit the beach, and for several years made frequent trips to her vacation home in Panama City.
Pat amazed all around her by surviving many health challenges and the loss of her husband. She remained determined to be self-sufficient. While wheelchair bound and impaired from a stroke, she managed to live alone, maintain a spotless home, cook her own meals, and take care of herself, her plants, and her beloved dog.
Family was central to everything Pat did; it was her pride and joy. She was a true Matriarch-a strong, generous, and supportive Mother, Mother-in-Law, and Maw Maw who will be sorely missed. She and Mac raised three fine sons: David (LeighAnn) McGhee, Dwayne (Miriam) McGhee, and Danny (Missy) McGhee, all of Rome, Georgia. There are grandchildren: Matthew (Alona) McGhee (Rome), Coley McGhee (Bremen), Grant (Beth) McGhee (Carrollton), Ethan McGhee (Athens); step-grandchildren: Jeff Langley (Austin, TX), Shari (Tyler) Wilson (Greenville, SC), and Sam Langley (Orlando, FL); and great-grandchildren: Braxton McGhee and Brantley McGhee (Jacksonville, FL), Ivey Jane McGhee (Carrollton), Alyssa and Adalynn Alford (Rome); nieces: Robin Kirby (Sugar Valley), Darla Brown and Sheryl Stone (Calhoun).
Thank you to the staff at Heyman Hospice who took excellent care of Pat in her final days, especially her nurse, Michelle Allie. Heartfelt thanks from the family are extended to her caregiver, Beverly Brooks.
