The Funeral Service for Carol will be at 3:00 pm on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Deacon Dave Roth officiating.
Carol was born January 23, 1947, in Dubuque, the daughter of Martin and Mary (Strief) Nebel. On August 13, 1966, she married Gerald Hammel Sr., the love of her life, at Holy Spirit Parish - Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dubuque.
Carol attended Holy Trinity grade school, and graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School in 1965. She continued her education at Bayless Business College.
Carol was the president of River Valley Boiler from 1983 to 1991.
Carol was a proud, life-long resident of the Point area of Dubuque. She was a member of Girl Scouts, and served on its board. She was a director for Camp Little Cloud, a PTA member, a mentor at Marshall Elementary School, and a CCD teacher at Holy Trinity. Carol enjoyed baking holiday cookies with her husband, who she affectionately called her "baking buddy". She spent countless hours crocheting for her family, as well as making baby blankets for the Mercy Hospital NICU. She also enjoyed going shopping, especially with her son-in-law, Steve, as well as her partner in crime/grandson, Andrew. She acted as the neighborhood mom, always looking after everyone that came into her home. The refrigerator was always open for those who came to visit. She was known for her sarcasm and her ability to get anywhere she needed without ever possessing a driver's license.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald Hammel, Sr.; her children, Gerald Louis (Steve Koeller-Hammel) Hammel, Jr. of Dubuque, Mary Kay (Ricky) Maas of Peosta, Brenda (Larry) Husemann of East Dubuque, IL; six grandchildren, Andrew (Stephanie) Maas, Ashley Maas, Abigail (Drew Johnson) Husemann, Michael (Camden Henkels) Husemann, Annika Husemann, and Natalie Husemann; three great-grandchildren with one expected in April of 2025, Madison, and Brooklyn; a special niece, "little sister", Mary Ann (Mark) Gilligan; a life-long friend, Patty Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Mark Hammel in infancy; her parents-in-law, Omer and Loretta (Schueller) Hammel; one sister, Shirley Lang; one brother, Bill Nebel; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Carol's name.
Carol's family would like to extend a special Thank You to the nursing staff in the Mercy ICU, Shirley, Carol's ostomy nurse for her exceptional care, the nurses in the cardiac unit, and Dr. John Whalen.
