Carol W. Awender, PhD, passed away March 31, 2024 after a long battle with chronic lung disease.
She was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, attended Cottey College, and subsequently graduated from The University of Wisconsin. She went on to earn her PhD in Psychology from the University of Akron.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Awender, MD, her daughter, Mary Honeycutt, and siblings Lucy Bottoni, Gilbert Sutherland, Priscilla Boscoff, and Sylvia Barry. She is survived by her children Scott Awender, MD (Nancy Awender, MD), Jill Shankar, JD, MBA (Vijay Shankar, MBA), Leslie Awender, MFA (Brice Harris, MA); her grandchildren Morgan Honeycutt, JD, Gabrielle Awender, and Thomas Awender; and her siblings, Rosalie Stump and Warren Sutherland.
Carol was a fiercely independent woman and a strong advocate for women's rights and animal rights. She served as a volunteer for JN "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island for more than 20 years. She enjoyed nature, birds, shelling on the beaches of Sanibel, painting, and most importantly, all of her cats and dogs over the years.
A private ceremony with her family to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank Annebritt Makebakken for all of the care that she gave to our mother for the past few years, as well as Northeast Ohio Hospice and all of the staff at Laurel Lake.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Summit County Humane Society, Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary, or the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
