Carlyle Michelson, age 93, of Knoxville, formerly Oak Ridge, entered into eternal life on April 26. 2020.
Carlyle was born on March 16, 1927 in Merrill, Wisconsin. He married his wife of 62 years, Margaret, on December 26, 1950. Carlyle loved to take long walks with his wife, went on 48 cruises, and traveled the world on business and pleasure. He loved his children and grandchildren and instilled in them a passion for learning. While he stressed the importance of an education and working to the best of your abilities, he also emphasized that life should be enjoyed, and one should always have compassion for his fellow man. His live long mantra was "any job worth doing is worth doing right".
Carlyle was preceded in death by his wife Margaret (2013); parents Cecilia and Chris; sisters Mary and husband Oscar, Mildred and husband Milton, Isabelle and husband Bill, Katherine and husband Sam, and Elsie; brothers Earl and wife Ethel, Peter and wife Mabel, Chris and wife Claire, and beloved granddaughter Christen.
Carlyle is survived by his three children and three grandchildren. Doctor Marie Michelson, husband Doctor Jim Beattie (Bowling Green, KY) and grandson James and his wife Jean (Fountain, Florida); Chris Michelson (pastor of Saint Albert the Great Catholic Church in Halls); and Carol Ritchie, husband Mark (Lexington, KY), grand children Jennifer (Nashville, TN) and Stephen (Lexington, KY).
While pursuing his love of learning, Carlyle received degrees from three institutions. The University of Kentucky at Lexington awarded him a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering and an Electrical Engineer Doctorate. He received a Doctor of Pile Engineering from the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology and a Masters in Science from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
Carlyle worked for TVA from 1952-1980. From 1980-1983 he was a member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) where he served as the Director of the Office for Analysis and Evaluation of Operational Data. From 1983-1995 he served on the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) becoming chairman in 1990. His work included oversight of the Advanced Boiling Water Design of Nuclear Reactors, Fire Protection Design for Nuclear Power Plants and oversight work with the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Design for SEAWOLF Nuclear Submarines. His work for the government earned him a level 4 on the Executive Service Scale. In 1995, upon his retirement he was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the United States Government. Carlyle was a Navy veteran.
Because of the Coronavirus the Funeral Mass will be private.
