Carl William Kannel, 84, formerly of St. Paul, passed away April 19, 2022, in Kingwood, Texas.
He was born February 12, 1938 in Union Township, Wisconsin to parents Louis and Rose Harmon Kannel and was one of nine children. The family owned dairy farms in Plum City and Fairchild, Wisconsin. He attended Prescott High School in Prescott, Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1963. While in the Army, he was present at President Kennedy's funeral in Washington, D.C.
Carl married Jean Oberg Mortenson in Minneapolis on August 25, 1972. The couple lived on St. Paul's East Side until moving to the Houston area in 2018.
For 36 years, Carl worked as a mechanic for Cemstone in St. Paul. He retired in 2002. He was a proud member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union, Lodge 737, for 35 years.
He had a passion for antique farm tractors and enjoyed attending tractor shows in the upper Midwest. He also enjoyed trips to the family's cabin in Castle Danger, Minn., on Lake Superior's North Shore.
He is survived by his wife Jean; daughter Leah and husband, Joseph Gyure, of Kingwood, Texas and their dog, Teddy; step-daughter Marjorie and husband, Gregory Nichols, of Kingwood, Texas, and their children, Glenn, Peyton, Jake and Kylie.
Funeral services will be held at Houston National Cemetery.
