Carl J. Baumgart, 101, passed away Monday, May 7, 2012, at the Pine Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Baumgart was a farmer and a member of St. Wendel Catholic Church, the Knights of St. John at St. Wendel, and the Knights of Columbus.
Carl was very talented working with his hands, and enjoyed building things made from steel and wood. He also enjoyed fishing, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and Indianapolis Colts football. Carl was the 1934 and 1935 Golden Gloves boxing champion in the heavyweight division and was known as "One Round Baumgart."
Survived by two sons and their wives, Maurice and Sharon Baumgart, of Haubstadt, and Gary and Jennifer Baumgart, of Evansville; a daughter and her husband, Mary and Bob Hirsch, of Haubstadt; sixteen grandchildren, John, Jason and Justin Baumgart, Audrey Smith, Rohn and Mike Baumgart, Shirley and Cathy Halbig, Tim Baumgart, Deborah Fleck, Steve Hirsch, Shelly Greer, Theresa Schrink, Amy Dutkeiwicz, Stacy Brown and Chris Baumgart; two daughters-in-law, Sheila Baumgart, of Bedford, Ind., and Phyllis Baumgart, of Haubstadt. Also surviving are twenty seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and a special niece, Elaine Baumgart.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mildred S. (Gillaume) Baumgart, in 2004; sons, Donald, Charles, Norman and John Baumgart; granddaughter, Barbara Baumgart; brothers, Raymond and Adolf Baumgart; and sisters, Pauline Wirth and Bernadetta Baumgart.
Services 9:45 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2012, at Pierre Funeral Home, continuing with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., at St. Wendel Catholic Church. Rev. Ed Schnur officiating. Burial to follow in the St. Wendel Church cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. Friends may also visit 9:00 a.m. to services on Friday.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Pine Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center and Heritage Hospice and their staffs for their compassionate care of Mr. Baumgart.
