Capt. William E. Cook, Jr., USN (Ret.), 72, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Monday, November 7, 2022. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 18, 2022, in the J Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd. at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will follow in Magnolia Cemetery, 70 Cunnington Ave.
Bill was born January 23, 1950, in Tupelo, Mississippi, son of the late Cmdr. William Eckford Cook, Sr., USN (Ret.) and the late Mae Nelle Gladney Cook. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1972 with a B.S. in Physics, and from the U.S. Naval War College in 1993 with an M.A. in Defense and Strategic Studies. He was in the submarine service through most of his 30 years in the Navy. He was commanding officer of the USS George Bancroft SSBN 643 (Blue) from 1989-1992, the USS Kentucky SSBN 737 (Gold) from 1994-1996, and the Naval Weapons Station Charleston from 2000-2002. He was a recipient of the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal. His enjoyment of traveling around the world continued in his retirement years. He will be remembered for his love of country and family.
He is survived by daughter, Cynthia Maiko Cook of Oakland, CA. He was preceded in death by
his wife, Fusako Iwata Cook, son, Christopher Tomo Cook, and his brother, Paul Christopher Cook.
