Capt. Robert Simpson Lewellen, US Navy (ret.), passed away Saturday, December 26, at the age of 100.
Bob was born in Owensboro, KY on Dec. 4, 1920
In 1940, he joined the class of 44 at the US Naval Academy. Upon graduation in 1943, he served on the USS Quick North Atlantic Convoy Duty, then Pacific Operations. Along with the US Naval War College, he had many assignments including serving a year in Saigon, Vietnam on the Logistics Staff. One of his more enjoyable duties was being assigned US Navel Attach? at Colombo Embassy in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Other duties were commanding officer, USS Arcadia, USS Vammen and USS Quick and Commodore of the Destroyer Squadron 24. Among his awards are Legion of Merit and Meritorious Service Medal.
After 30 years in the service upon retirement (1973), Bob moved to Flintlock Farm in Dunbarton where he developed a pick- your- own farm growing peaches, strawberries, and blueberries. During this same time, he spent half the year in France and restored a 14th century estate. He and his wife traveled often throughout the country and abroad. In 1985, he gave up farming and moved to Contoocook, where he participated in local community activities (Train Station and Library). He was particularly proud of the band gazebo which he had built for his wife, Jane. Bob had a love for Fly Fishing and owned a camp up in Maine where he enjoyed spending time.
Bob was an active member of the Hopkinton Congregational Church.
Bob's family includes his wife of 77 years, Jane (Stettler) Lewellen, from Indianapolis, IN; daughter, Rebecca Jane and her husband Sir William Purves, of London, England; son, Arthur Simpson Lewellen and his wife Susan, of Sanbornton, NH; granddaughter, Brittney (Lewellen) Peterson and her husband Corey Peterson; grandson, Robert Lewellen and Jacqueline McIntyre; three great grandchildren, Benjamin Peterson, Lexi Peterson, and Emma Lewellen. Bob also had several nieces and nephews.
Bob will be interned at the Navel Academy Memorial in Annapolis, MD. A celebration of Life service will be held at a future date.
