Charles Richard Friedrich of South Hadley died on April 22, 2021. He was the husband of the late Ellen Bindon Friedrich. They were married for 67 years. Richard was born in Holyoke on May 19, 1924 to the late Edmund Hugo and Katharine Rhodes (Hunt) Friedrich of Holyoke. Richard was a graduate of the Loomis School (now Loomis-Chaffee) in Windsor, CT, and attended Dartmouth College and the University of Pennsylvania. He spent his working career at E. H. Friedrich Company in Holyoke, the business started by his grandfather. Located on the corner of Race and Sargeant Streets, it was a premier roofing and sheet metal contractor. He was a board member the Holyoke Family Service Society, a corporator of Vanguard Savings Bank, a member of the Holyoke Hospital Association, and treasurer of his church. He was an excellent amateur photographer. He loved working in his garden and attending live theater and concerts and travelling with Ellen. In his late 50s, Richard learned to sail and became a member of United States Power Squadrons. Richard leaves two daughters: Susan Jubinville and her husband Cary of Granby and Nancy Neff and her husband Brian of Charlestown, RI. He leaves five grandchildren: William Jubinville, Jeffrey Jubinville, Robert Jubinville, Gretchen Neff Lambert and her husband Daniel, and Madeline Neff. He also leaves a nephew, Kristian Friedrich and his wife Linda. He was predeceased by his brother Edmund Ernst Friedrich. Richard's family wishes to thank the staff of the Wound Care Center of Holyoke Medical Center; Dr. Richard Fox; his caregivers, especially Cathy Beaudreau; and his kind, thoughtful neighbors.
Curran-O'Brien Funeral Home in South Hadley is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no calling hours. A private ceremony will be held at the convenience of the family.
