Edward E. "Buddy" Stone Jr., 83, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2024 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster in Charlotte, North Carolina.
"Buddy," as he was known to his family and friends, came into this world on August 10, 1940 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Margaret Greene and Edward E. Stone Sr. and spent his childhood growing up in Charlotte.
Throughout his life Buddy enjoyed a wide variety of interests and hobbies. In his early years, he was a member of the esteemed Charlotte Boys choir, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and graduated from high school at Wingate University. Buddy obtained a Bachelor's Degree in business from the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He also attended Stetson University College of Law.
Following college, Buddy embarked on a lifelong journey of entrepreneurial success. He founded and operated a long list of businesses across North Carolina and Georgia including Tamarack Companies of Banner Elk, Anchor Development Company, Atlanta Medical Printing Services, The Stagecoach General Store, Classic Home Game Rooms, and Classic Home Billiards.
Buddy's keen business acumen was complemented by his adventurous spirit and zest for life, and he was always seeking unique and one-of-a-kind experiences with his beloved wife Susan, whom he met on a blind date and spent 56 wonderful years devoting his life to.
One of Buddy's greatest joys was boating. He was a seaman at heart, a licensed ocean pilot from the U.S. Coast Guard, a member of the American Offshore Powerboat Racing Association and was happiest behind the helm of a boat on the open water. Ever the adventurer, Buddy enjoyed traveling and snow skiing around the world with Susan and was one of the original founders of the Crescent Ski Council. Buddy also had a passion for collecting and restoring classic cars, including a 1955 Nomad that he was so proud to own.
Buddy was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Atlanta Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta.
This endearing man's life was defined by his genuine kindness and willingness to help others, his infectious optimism and the loyalty and devotion he extended to his family and friends. Every conversation ended with, "What in the world can I do to help you?" That was our Buddy and his loss will be greatly felt by all those who were privileged to know him.
In addition to his parents, Buddy was preceded in death by his beautiful red-headed wife, Susan Haag Stone.
Left to survive his memory; his sister, JoAnn King and husband Joe of Charlotte; brother-in-law, Frank Haag and wife Leslie of Carmel, Indiana; two very special aunts that he called his "sisters," Sarah Boggs of Fallston, and Dorothy Hoyle of Shelby; and a cousin that he called his "little sister," MaeBeth Boggs. Also, many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 25, 2024 from 11:30am to 12:30pm at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home in Fallston, North Carolina. A private burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.
