Brooks Cowden Matthews, Jr., 76, of Cornelius died peacefully May 25, 2022, at his home surrounded by family.
Brooks was born on April 10, 1946 in Birmingham, AL, to the late Brooks and Louise Knight Matthews. He grew up in Mobile, Alabama, graduated from University of Southern Mississippi, and proudly served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam. He attained the rank of Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a successful business executive where he was mentor and friend to many and loved by all. He was an avid golfer, card player, passionate Alabama football fan and appreciated a good cigar with his friends at The Peninsula Club. Above all else, he loved spending time with his family. Special memories were made in Maine and Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
As many have said, once you met Brooks you never forgot him and he never forgot you. He was a faithful servant of the Lord his entire life.
Survivors include his loving wife Patricia Johnston Matthews; sons, Wes Strickland (Lisa) of Cornelius and Brooks Matthews, III (Katherine) of Charleston, SC; daughter, Shannon Strickland (Paul) of Cleveland, OH; sister, Catherine Walther of Atlanta, GA; 11 grandchildren, Tyler, Joshua, Michael and Jonathan Musial; Caitlin MacKinnon; Riley, Catherine and Marie Strickland; Peyton, Eleanor and Frances Matthews; and 1 great-grandson, Addison Strickland. He is preceded in death by his son, Howard Cole Strickland and sister, Peggy Carter.
Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Wounded Warrior Project.
The funeral service will be held at St. Mark Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 11 AM. Visitation will be 10-11 prior in the narthex. Burial will follow at Northlake Memorial Gardens.
