Independence, humor and storytelling - all these were marks of a life well lived by Bobby G. Stroud of Simpsonville, SC. Bob left us at age 91 on January 19, 2021 dying of COVID. With a distinguished military career in the Army that spanned multiple decades of service from Alaska, Taiwan, White Sands Missile Range, and more, Bob was educated in missile technology by Wernher Von Braun, Kurt Debus and other notable rocket scientists. His stories were endless and enjoyed by all.
Born on February 5, 1929 in Fort Smith Arkansas, Bob was an avid Razorbacks' fan who had a gift for sounding just like a razorback pig. It was a bit embarrassing to go with him to a barbecue restaurant, when he decided to cut loose with his pig sounds. But that was Bob.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Grace Stroud and his beloved wife Brightsie W. Stroud. Brightsie was the love of his life and they were married for 35 years at the time of her passing. He leaves behind his stepson, Chuck Gallagher and his wife Deborah Cone of Landrum, SC along with his two grandsons, Rob Gallagher, 34 and Alex Gallagher, 30. Bob loved to share the story about how he was stuck with Rob and Alex at the top of a Ferris wheel. He began to rock back and forth, and it was Bob's great pleasure to hear both boys scream with delight as he shook their faith in the contraption and knowledge that gravity could be dangerous.
Having lived in Arnold Maryland for the majority of their married life, Bob and Brightsie took in their next-door neighbors to be their family and loved them as such. Melanie Dalton and her husband Noel Dalton and their children, Morgan Dalton, 28, Kent Dalton, 24, Megan Dalton, 23 and Noel C. Dalton, 17, will sorely miss their "Papa Bob."
Two weeks ago, Bob was sitting at his favorite restaurant - Arizona Steakhouse in Simpsonville, SC nursing a drink and regaling in Army stories to any who would listen. He always said, "When I get to the place that I cannot drive my car, I may as well be dead." Bob slipped from this life quickly and easily. I am confident the reunion with my mother has been glorious. Rest in Peace - Bob-a-loo!
