Billy Joe Hammond, 92, passed away on May 11, 2024.
A Celebration of Life is planned for 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 19, 2024, at First Methodist Church, Burnet, Texas.
Billy was born on September 21, 1931, in Lampasas, Texas to Joe L. and Rosa Lee Hammond. He attended Lampasas High School and graduated from Abilene High School.
Billy proudly served his country in the U. S. Air Force from 1951-1954 and was released early to pursue his education to become a pastor. He married Virginia Box on May 30, 1955.
He Southwestern University in Georgetown then graduated from Southwest College in San Marcos, Texas. Billy was licensed to preach from the Burnet UMC, the went on to become an ordained Elder with the UMC. He served as a United Methodist Pastor for 42 years where he pastored churches throughout The Southwest Texas Conference and retired in 1997 with him and Virginia moving to Burnet.
Billy loved Longhorn football, crossword puzzles, clowning around and reading.
Hed is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Rosa Hammond; brothers, Walt Hammond and Eldon Hammond; and son, Danny Hammond.
Billy is survived by his wife of 68 years, Virginia Hammond; daughter, Edith Folsom and husband, Terry; grandchildren, Robert Martinez, David Dannheim, Brigitta Spethson, and Benjamin Hammond, as well as nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Leldon Matthews.
