Billy Roland Childress, 89, of Columbus passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 1, 2023, in the chapel of Lunsford Funeral Home with Rev. Philip Edge officiating.
Billy was born on March 9, 1934, in Cuthbert, GA the son of the late Carlton Clyde and Jessie Melton Childress. He was U.S. Army Veteran serving in the famed 101 Airborne Division known as the Screaming Eagles. He was a graduate of Cuthbert High School and received a degree in Civil Engineering from Southern Poly Tech. He was retired as City Engineer for the City of Cuthbert over city utilities, a member of the Georgia Rural Water Association, former City Engineer for the City of Manchester. He was a former Civil Engineer for the Georgia Department of Transportation for 20 years, Greens Keeper for the City of Dawson Country Club and a member of the Cuthbert United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Patricia Swanson Childress of Columbus, 2 daughters, Karla (Rudy) Stone of Leesburg, GA and Katherine (Tommy) Michael of Fayetteville, GA, 3 sons, Carlton Rhodes Childress of Bainbridge, Douglas Loran (Michelle) Fields of Sharpsburg, GA and William Patrick (Niki) Childress of Columbus, 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 30, 2023, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and also briefly prior to services on Saturday from 10:00 until 10:30 at the funeral home.
