Billy (Bill) Lex Burgess, 81, of Madisonville, TN succumbed to Asbestosis in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family on January 30, 2022. Bill was born August 30th, 1940 in Tellico Plains, TN, to Lex and Alice (Atkins) Burgess. He graduated from Tellico Plains High School in 1960. After graduation Bill enlisted in the US Army serving proudly at Fort Rucker, Alabama, from 1963 to 1965. He married Carolyn Shell on April 30th, 1966 and were married for 50 plus years. Bill was a retired Electrician at Aluminum Company of America, Inc (ALCOA) working from 1965 to 1999. He also was the owner and operator of Burgess Heating & Air for 50 plus years, serving the counties of Monroe, McMinn, Loudon and Blount. Bill loved all sports, especially football, among his favorite's were the Washington Redskins, Atlanta Braves Baseball, Nascar Racing and anything University of Tennessee. The UT Vols football was his favorite; he traveled for 10 plus years and never missed a home or away game with his special friends, especially Bob Wooldridge. In his earlier years he loved to spend his free time in the mountains and lakes, boating, camping, hunting and fishing. Bill was preceded in death by his parents (Lex and Alice Atkins Burgess), mother-in-law (Pearl Nichols Shell), wife (Carolyn Shell Burgess), sister (Betty Burgess) and grandson (Jude Burgess). He is survived by his children Teresa Burgess, Mike Burgess (Angela Reese) and Lisa (Mark) Burgess Bradford Brown, brother Larry (Linda) Burgess (Cherry Log, GA) and sister Carol Burgess (West Palm Beach, FL). Special sisters-in-law (Shell Girls): Darlene Lovingood and the late Dr. Bob Lovingood, Darrell & Pat Watson, Ronnie & Bobbie Arp and Mack & Regina Williams. Grandchildren: Kimberly, Allie & Joe Bradford and Jennifer, Mikayla, Micah & Lily Burgess. Many nieces and nephews. A special thank you to the UT Hospice in Knoxville, TN for their loving care and support. Memorial Service 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Walnut Grove Baptist Church, Rev. Jonas Turpin and Rev. Darrell Collins officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. Saturday at Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
