Beverly "Bev" Ann Slattery Hartford, 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Bloomington, Indiana on June 13, 2021. Born in Lynn, MA on September 15, 1942, she grew up in Standish, Maine.
Bev was predeceased by her parents, Erma (Hartford) and Harry E. Slattery and her infant sister, Edith, of Standish.
As the valedictorian of the last graduating class of Standish High School in 1960, she went on to receive her B. A. from Boston University in 1964, her M.A. from Kansas State University (Manhattan) in 1967, and her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975. She joined the faculty of Indiana University, Bloomington in 1970 and retired as full professor of linguistics in 2006.
Bev's thirst for travel was quenched as her linguistics research and professorship took her to places she had only dreamt about as a "young girl from Standish, Maine." Three Fulbright Scholarships - one from 1976-1977 at the Adam Mickiewiz University in Poznan, Poland and two at Tribhuvan University in Nepal (1984-1985; 1992-1993), sponsored these journeys.
In retirement she joined the local photography club where her keen and artistic eye was nourished as seen in her amazing photos, especially those of the wildlife that consumed the variety of treats she faithfully offered. However, it was the "Women Writing for a Change" group that brought her, perhaps, the deepest satisfaction. Friendships with women from many areas of life flourished as they shared their stories, wrote their thoughts and feelings, and basked in the closeness they formed.
As her physical health quickly declined from the ravages of cancer, the love and caring from her abundant friends and close family nourished and sustained her heart and soul throughout.
Bev is lovingly remembered by her sister Pam Slattery-Thomas and brother-in-law David Thomas of Standish, Maine and her nephew Patrick Thomas of Richland, Washington. Her beloved 15-year-old Siamese, Pandora, will be welcomed into the home and hearts of Shelley Hahn and Greg Simon, to the family's grateful comfort.
Other special thanks go to Dick and Gloria Bier, Marlin Howard, Kathleen Bardovi-Harlig, Rebekah Spivey, Kelly Gleason Sage, Joyce Jewell and Alwiya Omar, as well as so many others too numerous to mention.
A celebration memorial service of Bev's life will be held in the Terrace Room of Meadowood Retirement Community, Bloomington, Indiana, on Saturday, June 26th at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in loving memory of Bev to the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, Inc., A.S.P.C.A. or other charity of your choice will be gratefully accepted.
