Betty Ponder Wilson, 82, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend, entered the larger life on Saturday, February 2, 2019 in Orlando, Florida, after an extended illness.
Service arrangements will be announced at a later date by Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, Rock Hill, SC.
Born in Buck Creek, SC on June 15, 1936, Ms. Wilson was the fifth born of eight children to the late Marion Clyde Ponder, Sr. and the late Eva Scruggs Ponder. She was raised in Mayo, SC where she graduated Chesnee High School and attended Mayo Baptist Church throughout her young life. Ms. Wilson left Mayo for Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Home Economics and met many people who would become her lifelong friends. One of those was William Blackburn (Blackie) Wilson, III, whom she would marry in December of 1958. They were married for 17 years, had two children, and enjoyed a beautiful life together. During that time, Betty served in many capacities within her community, and was especially proud of the opening of the Speech and Hearing Center in Rock Hill during her tenure as President of the Junior Welfare League. Blackie and Betty divorced in 1975.
In 1979, Ms. Wilson accepted a position with the Decorative Micarta division of Westinghouse as a Specifications Representative - a job she loved which would take her to lower South Carolina, Texas, and ultimately Orlando, Florida. She served on the national Color Marketing Board and adored working with color and its introduction into various industries.
In Florida, Ms. Wilson once again found "home". She enjoyed the warmth, the palm trees, the social life and several energetic and professional organizations where she could use her talents and once again contribute to her greater community. Ms. Wilson never wished to leave Florida and would remain there through her final days.
Ms. Wilson is survived by her daughter, Linda Wilson Cain and son-in-law, William Gordon (Gordy) Cain, Jr.; her son, William Blackburn Wilson IV; her grandchildren, Savannah Rose Cain and William Gordon Cain III; two brothers, James David Ponder and Fred Thurmond Ponder. Ms. Wilson was predeceased by her parents, her sister Mildred Eugene Ponder, and brothers, Marion Clyde Ponder, Jr., William Wesley Ponder, Johnny Ray Ponder and Joseph Lee Ponder.
