Born September 12, 1937 in Frostproof, Florida, Betty Jean was the oldest child of Ernest Lamar Brown and Zera Belle Johnson Brown Allen and was baptized Methodist. Named after movie stars Betty Grable and Jean Harlow, she was a very popular student and beauty queen. She was also known as BJ, a nickname given to her by her basketball coach. She was involved in many high school activities including cheerleading, band, basketball, yearbook, dance, and piano. She was awarded the American Legion School Award.
Betty graduated from Frostproof High School in 1955 and briefly attended Florida State University majoring in accounting. She then attended IBM business courses. She went on to marry, raise a family, and have secretarial and office management careers. She also took art lessons, played the guitar, and cooked delicious meals.
Betty came to Houston, Texas in the 1960s and moved to Friendswood in early 2000. Betty will be remembered for her well-appointed homes, her beautiful landscaping and flower gardens, her generosity, and her interest in history. Her landscaping received many compliments, and she found her greatest joy working in her yard. She sponsored many of her grandchildren's activities and financially supported many friends and family members in need. She also had a keen interest in genealogy, particularly the Civil War era. She held many positions in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, including Treasurer and President, and was honored to be voted Honorary Life President, Texas Division.
Betty's family is extremely grateful to Lisa Ragland Caregivers, Traditions Hospice, and the many supportive friends and neighbors who helped them during this time. Without them, her family would not have been able to honor Betty's wishes.
