Help us celebrate Betty! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Betty.
Betty Adella Childs passed away March 9, 2024, in her home at the age of 87. Graveside services will be held on April 13th at 11:00 am, on what would have been her 88th birthday, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She leaves behind a legacy of love, humor and strength felt by all she met.
She was born April 13, 1936, to Houston and Hazel Haile in Dumas Texas. She spent her childhood as an only child but was surrounded by a multitude of cousins and other relatives, so she was never quite alone. She was a graduate of Dumas High School and was found to tell the tale of the Football team picking up her little car and putting it in various places around the campus including the steps leading into the school.
She found the true love of her life working at the Dumas local radio station KDDD with a local DJ Frank Childs. They were married on October 10, 1961. Between them at the time they had one son, Andy Wayne and two daughters Adella Kaye and Susan Diane. After several years of bouncing from town to town, as one in the broadcasting business tends to do, they had another son in Lubbock named Gregory Dee and finally when they landed in Midland their son Michael Christopher was born.
When they made their final move to Odessa Betty became involved at the Central YMCA as the Aquatic Director where she worked for several years and then moved on to Odessa Physical Therapy (OPT) where she worked at helping countless people get moving again from a variety of injuries and surgeries while also keeping it light and fun so it felt more like play then actually work as those muscles regained their strength. She was known for her large collection of rubber ducks which surrounded the OPT pool and was never not in a bathing suit. She retired from OPT at the age of 85.
While she loved working with others it was her children that gave her the deepest joy. She was truly the definition of unconditional love when it came to her children. Always there to encourage and love them no matter what troubles might have come their way. She offered advice when asked but more importantly she listened and loved. She then transferred that unconditional love to her children's spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her great great grandchild as they came into her life. She loved loving on them and was great at making any one of them think they were her favorite.
Betty's passing has reunited her with her father and mother but more importantly her soulmate and husband as well as many relatives and friends. Her children, in-laws, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchild look forward to eventually being reunited with her so that we can hug her again and hear her say "I love you forever."
The family would like to recognize and thank the amazing caregivers that allowed our mom to remain in her home during the last two years, especially Joan Smith, Monica Lavenant and her wonderful group of women and Hospice of Midland and Odessa.
