Betty Brooks Huston, 91, passed away Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Betty was a resident of Westminster Oaks.
Born to Nathan L. and Minnie Leah Smith Brooks on November 26, 1926 in Grayson, Gwinnett County, GA, Betty was a graduate of Grayson High School and attended Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta, GA. In June 1945, she left school and married her sweetheart Jack Huston who was discharged from the US Navy following the end of WWII. They moved to New Jersey while he attended hair styling school in New York City. Returning to Atlanta, they both worked as hairstylists at the Davison Paxon Glemby Salon in downtown Atlanta and at the Lenox Square location. Betty opened her own beauty salon in Decatur, GA in 1970. When she retired in 1989, Betty enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling with family and friends, gardening, sewing, knitting, crafts, bowling and playing cards. In 2011 she moved from her home in Tucker, GA, to Westminster Oaks Tallahassee to be closer to her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Jenny Huston Crowley (Mike) of Tallahassee, FL, her son, William "Bill" Brooks Huston of Eatonton, GA, daughter-in-law Anna D. Huston, granddaughter Natalie Brooke Broadway (Wes), grandsons SGT Nathan J. Huston, US Army, and Alex Martin Huston, great granddaughters Skylar Broadway and Katie Huston (daughter of Kim Huston), great grandson Jackson Broadway, sisters Sue Nix of Sacramento, CA, Bobbye Pratt of Snellville, GA, and Cornelia Guthrie (Jimmy) of Grayson, GA, nieces Wilma Burgin (Norman), Vivian Ard, Sharon Kelley (Pat), Marsha Strickland (Craig), Lisa Guthrie (Dennis Waller), and nephews Dan Nix (Lynne), Kenny Butler, Don Pratt (Terre), Leslie Guthrie (Kimberly), Larry Guthrie (Becky) and many great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her son John Martin Huston of Lawrenceville, GA (June 2018) and her husband Jack Huston (October 1970).
No memorial service will be held at Betty's request. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westminster Foundation, 4449 Meandering Way, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
