Bethene Margaret Bohn of Rapid City, SD (formerly of Strandburg, SD) passed away peacefully at Serenity Place in Rapid City at the age of 89. Born February 9, 1931, in Madison MN, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Margaret (Street) Bandt. Bethene graduated from Revillo High School in 1949 before going on to receive her teacher's certificate from Northern State Teacher's College. Bethene always spoke fondly of her year teaching in a country school near where she grew up. Bethene valued education and throughout her life promoted that value to her children and grandchildren. Always an avid reader, she had a keen intellect.
Bethene married Hollis Edwin Bohn on February 10, 1951. As a couple, they lived and worked side by side on the family farm near Strandburg until Hollis passed away in August 2011. Bethene then moved to an apartment in Milbank before permanently relocating to Rapid City to be closer to family.
Bethene is the mother of two daughters, Diane and Linda. Bethene, throughout her life, was a devoted mother. Despite the long hours of hard work the farm required, Bethene always managed to find the time for her children and their interests and activities.
Bethene was a deeply spiritual woman whose life was guided by her Christian faith. She was a lifelong member of the Tabor Lutheran Church where she was an active participant in a variety of church activities.
Bethene is survived by her brother, Kermit Bandt and his wife, Diana, of CA; brother-in-law, Richard Wismer, of Britton, SD; daughter Diane and husband, Stephen Schirber, of Rapid City, SD; daughter Linda and husband, Scott Kieffer of Hyannis, MA. Bethene is also survived by five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Hollis and her sister, Elaine Wismer.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date with burial to take place at Tabor Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial donations in Bethene's memory may be made to Tabor Luther Church, PO Box 37, Strandburg, SD 57265 or to a charity of one's choice.
