Bernard "Bernie" Nelson Hardy, 74, a devoted husband and proud father of Shippensburg, PA, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, December 7, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 15, 1945 in Martinsburg, WV, the son of the late Guy B. and Nora L. (Nelson) Hardy.
Bernie retired from AIG in 2008 with 42 years of service. He prided himself both on helping people realize their dreams and helping them in times of need. His clients weren't just customers, they were his friends. He graduated from Martinsburg Senior High School in 1963 and from the Auto Body Diesel School of Nashville, TN in 1964.
In Bernie's early years, he enjoyed hunting, collecting coins, casinos, Washington Redskins football and NASCAR. In his retirement years, he was a long-distance napper, a connoisseur of diner cuisine, a scholar of lottery ticket scratching, and a professional TV watcher. Among his favorite TV shows were Supernatural, Law and Order and NCIS. He was also an armchair Meteorologist, always reminding his family when they would need an umbrella and when to use caution due to slippery roads. He cherished the companionship of his late cats, Tiger and Oddball, Rambo, Skeeter, Mittens and Abigail.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Masland Association in Carlisle, PA; the Carlisle Hospital ER, 2nd and 3rd floor staff; Carlisle Hospital Rehab; UPMC Heart and Vascular of Harrisburg and Carlisle; Dr. Louie Myers and Residential Home Care and Hospice of Mechanicsburg, PA.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Linda Ellen (Elliott) Hardy; his daughter, Erica Lynn (Hardy) Diehl and husband, Edward; brother-in-law, Kenneth R. Elliott and wife, Barbara; two nephews; a great-niece and a great-nephew as well as his granddog, Bear B. Diehl-Hardy and his precious fur-angel kitty, Maggie Mae Hardy.
