Mr. Bennie Wayne Reed, age 81, of Rome, passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2021, at his residence.
Mr. Reed was born in Atlanta, Texas on July 31, 1939, son of the late Wayne Allen Reed and the late Willie Salone Thomas Rivero. He was a graduate of C. F. Vigor High School in Mobile, AL. He also graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in Business Administration and then graduated from Georgia State University with a Master of Business Administration in Finance & International Business Administration. Mr. Reed was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving as a Guided Missile Installation Electrician before starting college. He began his working career with U. S. General Accounting Office and Department of the Navy in Norfolk, VA before joining International Paper in New York as U. S. and overseas auditor. Upon moving to Rome in 1969, he joined Georgia Kraft (Now International Paper Co.). After completing his master's degree, he helped build and served as Vice President of Murata Corporation and then left there to start his own business.
Mr. Reed was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church where he served as Finance Chairman and enjoyed going on and supporting mission trips. He loved flying his own airplane and playing tennis with the Rome Tennis Club. Mr. Reed also enjoyed traveling for business and pleasure many times with family including trips to Brazil and Japan. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their cabin on Little River in Alabama and at Perdido Key in Pensacola, FL.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Allen Downey Reed, to whom he was married on March 23, 1962; two sons, Tyson Wayne Reed (Katie), and James Craig Reed (Kristi); three grandchildren, Alexander Grant Reed, Mary Elizabeth Reed-Brown (Ethan Brown), and Kristina Elizabeth Reed.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at 11am in the Gazebo at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Brady Fortenberry will officiate.
Pallbearers are asked to assemble at the cemetery on Tuesday at 10:45am and include: Active: Larry Adams, Charles Downey, Doug Mather, Jared Mather, James Morgan, and Neil Sanders. Honorary: J. Doyle Buffington, and Armon Dula.
Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, has charge of the arrangements.
