After graduating from Burke, he received a scholarship to Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida. Benjamin was survived by his eldest child Wanda Violet Mitchell, son Benjamin Mitchell II and his daughter in law Kathryn Mitchell (nee Wilson), his youngest son Keith Alexander Mitchell (Kazembe) and his beloved grandchild Miles Huxley Copeland Mitchell.
